1870, 12¢ black, large die essay on white glazed paper (151-E10), 39 x 44 mm, hinged on cream backing paper, Very Fine and rare.

The discovery of the characteristic secret mark in the lobes of the "2" on the 12¢ value, added when the die was turned over to Continental in April, 1873, was the first evidence that these essays were actually printed later, after the original frames had been cut off the transfer relief in order to produce the multiple new dies for the departmental stamps.
