()

Togo, 1914, 20pf ultramarine, variety 2mm spacing and 3mm spacing se-tenant in a vertical pair (SG H17b), comprised in a vertical strip of three, the lower stamp from Setting 1, position 9, and the upper two stamps from Setting 2B, positions 39/49, deep color, perfectly centered, unused without gum. Extremely Fine. One of the most remarkable varieties of Togo and an important rarity.
SG £6,500 ($8,290)

ONLY SIX PAIRS, ALL UNUSED, ARE RECORDED.

Provenance: The Marquess of Bute

This rare variety was caused by the sheet of one hundred having been folded in half to receive the forme of Setting 1. When it was eventually discovered that the other half of the sheet had not been overprinted, the setting had already been altered. Consequently, the upper half, which had been folded over, received the overprint of Setting 2. Consequently, there were ten vertical pairs across the sheet with the two settings se-tenant.
The above strip of three emanates from a marginal block of twelve (4x3) from the Bute collection (lot 405), which formed the 7th to 10th vertical rows of the sheet.
