ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS POSTMARK.

Expertization: 1986 P.F. Certificate.

Dorn's Gold mine was an area located in the present day town of McCormick, where sometime between 1847 and 1852 gold was first taken after a local planter, William Burkhalter Dorn discovered a gold vein. The settlement that developed alongside and above the mines was initially known as Dorn's Gold Mines and later as Dorn Mine Post Office. During the Civil War, it was claimed that Dorn used his gold-mining profits to outfit an entire regiment of Confederate Soldiers.

The two recorded covers are from the same correspondence:
1. Dec 24, 1862, franked with a pair of 5¢ light blue (6) to Carrollton, Ga.
2. Nov 16, 1863, franked with 10¢ greenish blue (11c) to Carrollton, Ga.
