Pier D’Arena c.d.s., 3 Jan 1863, on folded letter to Buenos Aires, Argentina, via Genoa-Turin T.P.O. (backstamp) Lanslebourg, France (red entry c.d.s.), London 6 Jan), Southampton and Rio de Janeiro, handstamped "P.P.", no postal markings after leaving London; stamps have four margins except 80c barely touched at upper right, Very Fine.

A VERY RARE MIXED ISSUE FRANKING TO A SCARCE DESTINATION.

The cover bears the 1 Lira French packet rate (the British packet rate would have been 80 centesimi). It was carried on the French steamer
Oneida arriving at Rio on February 1st and at Buenos Aires on February 13th. The date of the cover, January 3, 1863, is also only the third day of use for the Italian 15c blue.
