(Canada), red manuscript "18¾" rate, sender's instruction "Via Derby Line" (Vermont), red "Stanstead, L.C., Jan 6, 1840" Canadian exchange office c.d.s. with manuscript rate breakdown "U.S. 11½ + 4½ = 1/4" applied, probably at Derby Line, minor toning and edge wear, otherwise a Very Fine and exceptional rating. The rate of 18¾¢ was the U.S. "to the line" rate, The Canadian equivalent was 11½d, 4½d was due for Canadian postage, for a total of 16d or 1sh4d.
