1858 (Jun. 17) Washington, D.C. to Hong Kong, c.d.s. on cover addressed to Frigate Powhatan in care of U.S. Naval Storekeeper in Hong Kong, China, bearing 5¢ red brown (28) tied by c.d.s. and red "New York Br. Pkt. Jun 23" transit c.d.s., manuscript rating and "Rec'd at Shanghae / Augt 30th 1858", reverse with red "London 5 Jy '58" single-arc c.d.s. and a fine strike of the very rare small "Hong Kong 21 AU 58" single-arc datestamp (Webb type 12), reduced from opening at left, stains, stamp clipped at top, Fine, 39¢ British mail rate via Marseilles (1/5 = 34¢ and 5¢ required to be prepaid).
