1867 May Steam China, bold strike of straightline handstamp on cover from Japan to Warren, R.I. via San Francisco, carried by the second run of the P.M.S.S. "Colorado" leaving Yokohama May 25, 1867 and arriving into San Francisco June 13, entered U.S. mails with "San Francisco Jun 14 / 10" c.d.s. (with "10" obliterated by 4-ring cancel) and matching "20" rating handstamp (beneath stamp) to Warren, R.I., forwarded to Lafayette, Ind. with 3¢ rose (65) cancelled by grid and "Warren, R.I. Jul 9, 1867" double-circle datestamp, manuscript "Paid and Forwarded", backflap with embossed "W & Co."; expert cover repairs, Fine.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED COVERS BEARING STEAM CHINA FROM THE 2ND RETURN TRIP OF THE P.M.S.S. COLORADO ACCORDING TO MILGRIM.

This cover was carried on the second voyage of the monthly contract mail service of the PMSC between the West Coast of the U.S., China and Japan. The "Steam China" marking was only used on the first three return trips to the United States.
