1899 (Sep 11) "Marianas", type 1.2 "Marianas" Sep. 11 postmark with matching strikes of dark violet type 2.1 oval of dots and star tying 1¢ deep green (1) strip of three and 5¢ blue (5) single on cover to Makins & Co. in San Francisco, blue "from W.H. Rush / U.S.S. Solace" handstamped corner card, backstamped Yokohama Japan 16 Sep 99 and San Francisco Oct 9, 1899; Very Fine and rare.

"The type 1.2 postmark and 2.1 canceller are carryover postal devices from the Spanish postal administration. It is believed they were used on shore in Agana before the Navy post office was moved there from the 'Yomesite'. During the U.S. period of use, the year slug was removed (or became lost) and was replaced by an inked segement resembling a half-moon." (from Murphy).
