The Hawaiian postmark indicates that only the postage shore to ship in Hawaii was paid, and that the U.S. postage was collect. The ship's captain collected his fee of 2¢ when the letter was turned over to the San Francisco postmaster, who then applied the San Francisco markings. The 12 rating was ship captain's fee of 2¢ plus U.S. 10¢ postage for collect over 3000 miles. The ship Hunter was out of New Bedford, whaling in the North Pacific.
