Liberia 1860 (Jan 23) letter from Monrovia, Government House datelined folded letter from President Stephen A. Benson to Ben Coates in Phil., Pa., "Baltimore Md Mar 5" c.d.s. with matching "ship" and "5" handstamps, manuscript "M.C. Stevens", letter mentions the Harpers Ferry insurrection and part played by Frederick Douglas, also says he plans on going to Cape Mount for several weeks to make peace with the natives and have them remove their barricades; couple toned spots, Fine. Stephen A. Benson was the second president of Liberia from Jan 7, 1856 to Jan 4, 1864. His biggest accomplishment was the annexation of the colony of Maryland, now Maryland Country, into the Republic of Liberia in 1857.
