Prussian closed mail to Germany", red "N. York Br. THE ONLY RECORDED CHICAGO SUPPLEMENTARY FOREIGN MAIL USAGE.

Chicago used a supplementary mail postmark to denote mail sent on the last train East after the mail bags had been sealed. In an article by Charles Fricke,
The 1861-65 Chicago Supplementary Mail Postmark Mystery, it is discussed that the service provided in Chicago was not for foreign mail service since all recorded covers were addressed to cities in the East. This cover provides evidence that this service was available for all mails heading East via the rails. There is no indication as to whether an additional fee was charged for the service in Chicago.
