1861, 5¢ orange brown, type II (30), Absolutely precise centering with perforations clear of design at top and bottom, rich color and clear red grid cancel. A positively Superb gem.
Scott $1,325

THE 5¢ TYPE II IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCATE WITHOUT THE PERFORATIONS IMPINGING ON THE DESIGN AT EITHER THE TOP OR BOTTOM. WHEN THAT RARE ATTRIBUTE IS COMBINED WITH THE EXTRAORDINARY CENTERING AND BEAUTIFUL CANCEL OF THIS EXAMPLE, THE RESULT IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND GEM.

Expertization: 2001 P.F. Certificate.

Provenance: Hall

Finding a gem used single is exceedingly difficult as the 5 cent, type II is far scarcer used than mint. Due to the onset of the Civil War, the 5¢ orange brown had a period of use of less than two months. Used singles, therefore, are quite scarce. Gem used singles are virtually non-existent and, in fact, this is probably the finest extant.
