Lot 1866
1916, 30¢ orange red (476A), well centered for this, with brilliant color, bright paper and pristine, never hinged original gum. Post office fresh and Very Fine. Scott $5,750
A SUPERLATIVE EXAMPLE OF THIS TWENTIETH CENTURY RARITY.
Expertization: 1984 and 1997 P.F. Certificates.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing shows no record that the 30¢ orange on unwatermarked paper was ever perforated on the gauge 10 perforating machines. However, several sheets must have been perforated, and not recorded, prior to the changeover to the newer gauge 11 machines. Examples from three different plates, including two full panes of 100, have been certified.
