THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER FROM NORTHWEST TERRITORY IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Starting in July 1788, Colonel Sproat provided the only courier service to and from Marietta. This letter was carried on the second trip.

Northwest Territory was formed with the passing of the Ordinance of 1787. The first Northwest Territory settlement was founded in April of 1788 and was called Marietta. The settlement was on the east bank of the Muskingum River where it flows into the Ohio, laid out to a point across from Fort Harmar on the west bank of the river.
