1914 (31 July) registered censored envelope to Tsingtau (8.8) returned to Shanghai (29.8), bearing "China" surcharge on watermarked issue 4c on 10pf red and 10c on 20pf ultramarine (Michel 40, 41), cancelled by "Schanghai/Deutsche Post" segmented c.d.s., large framed "Gouvernementsseitig/unter Kriegsrecht geöffnet" handstamp (date "11.8.14" and initials"Oth" inserted by hand) in violet, with "Kaiserlich Deutsches Postamt/Tsingtao(Kiautschou)" paper seals, Very Fine and rare censored letter being the earliest recorded use of this handstamp according to the accompanying certificate.
