1856 (Jul. 21) New Orleans La. to Chalons sur Saone, France, folded letter bearing 5¢ red brown (12) two singles, deep rich color, both with ample to large margins, except right stamp just touching at top, tied by "New Orleans La. Jul 21" c.d.s., red "New-York Br. Pkt. Jul 29" exchange office c.d.s., transferred to Boston for the Cunard Line steamer Niagara, which departed on July 30 and arrived at Liverpool on August 11, Liverpool "AU-11 1856" transit backstamp, "Etats-Unis. Paq. Brit. A. Calais 12 Aout 56" transit with "26" (décimes) double-weight due handstamp, "Chalons S. Saone 12 Aout 56" arrival backstamp; both 5¢ with tiny corner creasing at upper left and some extra gum at stamp edges, tiny edge fault, Very Fine, double the 5¢ British Open mail rate via British packet, plus 26 décimes due for double-weight postage from England to France.
