1857 (Mar. 2) New Orleans La. to Nantes, France, blue folded letter bearing 5¢ red brown (12) horizontal pair, margins at sides, bottom and top cut in, tied by "New Orleans La. Mar. 2" c.d.s., red "New-York Br. Pkt. Mar 10" exchange office c.d.s., red Liverpool "24 MR 1857" transit backstamp, "Angl. Amb. Calais 24 Mars. 57" entry c.d.s. with framed "G B / 1F 60C" debit handstamp and manuscript "16" (décimes) due uprated to "24", reverse with French transit and "Nantes 25 Mars 57" arrival c.d.s.; erosion in horizontal file fold, a Very Fine usage, double the 5¢ British open mail rate per ½ ounce via British packet, plus triple-weight 24 décimes due (15 to 22.5 grams) for postage from England to France.
