Lot 4289
1902 (14 Jan.) "Heliographie d. Schutztruppe" form from Rehoboth to Windhoek, with "Kaiserlich Deutsches Gouvernement vom Südwestafrika" embossed paper seal (split upon opening), usual punch filing holes at top. Estimate 600 - 800
On 13 April 1899, a Telegraph office was opened in Swakopmund. The cable extended from Walfish Bay to Cape Town. A railway telegraph was then established in Windhoek on 13 August 1901.
To complement the missing telegraph links, a heliograph line was established in the north and south of the county prior to the outbreak of the Herero Rebellion.
Utilising Morse code, heliograms were transmitted by flashing lights during the day and by signal lamps at night. According to topographic conditions, the stations were 30 to 60 kilometers apart; 300 kilometers were thus covered in approximately three hours.
