Lot 1412

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), two singles, first with ample margins to clear at bottom, cancelled by black grid, on white envelope to Rose Clapp in West Haven with red "Binghamton N.Y. Feb. 19" c.d.s., other has large margins to touching two sides, tied by bright red grid, matching Aug. 27th c.d.s. and addressed to Miss Clapp in Black Rock; each cover with tiny edge tear, Very Fine and scarce pair of covers making a most appealing exhibit page.
Estimate 750 - 1,000

During the time span of this correspondence the more familiar Binghamton herringbone cancel was supplanted by a gridiron and the occasional pen cancel- this situation provided the basis for a number of clever fakes with the more valuable fancy herringbone added to cleaned or substituted stamps; the end result is that Binghamton covers with grid cancels have become quite scarce.
