Sale 301

Lot 1218

Windsor Vt., 5¢ brown (1), mostly large margins, crisp handsome color and sharp impression, tied by criss-cross strikes of "Paid" straightline cancellation in magenta, matching "Windsor Vt. Jan. 17" c.d.s. on 1848 folded letter to Woodstock Vt., vertical file fold passes beneath right sheet margin but does not affect it, Very Fine and rare. This was submitted to the Foundation as a violet cancel and has been listed in the Alexander 1847 Census as this color. Our own opinion is that the ink on the stamp is violet, though the postmark itself has darkened and aged somewhat differently (and in concurrence with the certificate) now appears as magenta, though the color in no way resembles the magenta found on covers used from Chicago or Hartford Ct.
