Caroline Islands 1858 (20 Aug.) cover front from New York to Ponape, postmarked red New Paid York c.d.s. with blue manuscript "10", addressed to Protestant missionary, L.G. Gulick, "Ponape, Ascension Isl, Micronesia" in care of Prof. Dewitt Alexander in Honolulu; extensive restoration onto a new envelope with bits of original back, Very Fine appearance.

The American Protestant mission was first established on Kusaie Island in early 1852. Gullick lived in Ponape beginning in December of that year. Alexander was the son of early Hawaiian missionaries and became Hawaii's first Surveyor General.
