Samoa 1895 (18 Apr.) registered envelope from Apia to Sydney, N.S.W. (30.4), bearing pair of 1889 20pf bright ultramarine tied by boxed "POSTAGE PAID/Imperial German Post-office/Apia 13-4-1895.", violet sender's oval datestamp on reverse (P.C. Fabricius); opening tears (one large at top), otherwise Very Fine and exceedingly rare.

This 1889 handstamp was provisionally employed as a cancelling device from late April until early September of 1895. Two examples of the English version are recorded— both are dated 18 April. Already described in the Berlin 1904 exhibition catalogue.
