1851, 12¢ black (17), horizontal strip of three, large margins except just touching at lower left corner, pen cancelled along with three 3¢ dull red (11) on 1857 cover to Batavia, E. Indies, postmarked Holmes Hole, Ma., May 4, New York, May 5 and red British "Paid, DP, 18 MY 18, 1857", manuscript "30" and "40" rated; the cover has sustained some water damage and is rather "crinkled" but is otherwise Fine. A rare destination for this period and an important cover despite the slight damage. The cover was prepaid at the 45¢ rate via Marseilles but is endorsed "via Southampton".
