Lot 1884

3¢ Navy (O37), tied by fancy violet 4-point star duplexed with "Georgetown D.C. Sep 28" c.d.s on cover to Capt. W.A.T. Maddux, Asst Qtr. Master, U.S. Marine Corps, Philadelphia, docketed 1878 "from sister about…" that can be erased for better appearance, Fine, single 3¢ domestic rate.
Estimate 400 - 500

Provenance: Markovits

This cover is noteworthy for three reasons: first, this is the only recorded use of Navy stamps from Georgetown; second, Capt. Maddux apparently illegally supplied his sister with Navy stamps for her personal use; and finally, the cover is an example of the trials being conducted by the Georgetown post office along with the Washington D.C. with this distinctive violet cancelling ink in 1878 and early 1879.
