1887, 2¢ black, trial color large die proof on India (212TC1), die sunk on card, 73x86mm, penciled "2" and "130" in margins. Very Fine and rare.
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED LARGE DIE PROOFS IN BLACK.

This black trial color proof was produced for the "Roosevelt" album project. The "130" refers to the die number assigned to this 1¢ die by the P.O.D. when it turned the die over to the B.E.P. The number "2" at the upper right probably marks this proof as the second impression pulled from the die for the project. The majority of the recorded black proofs from the Roosevelt album project are cut down, thus removing the penciled notation.
According to Ronald A. Byrns, writing in a 1993 issued of the
Essay-Proof Journal, there are about 50 different stamps having black large die proofs identified as being produced for the Roosevelt album project.
