Sale 309

Lot 1001

Early American paper money, two notes: 1.) Continental Currency, Act of Sept 26, 1778, $50, signed R. Cather & J. Dundas; 2.) Massachusetts, Act of May 5, 1780, $3, signed R. Cranch, Lam. Baldwin & Thos. Walley, both uncancelled and Fine, the latter accompanied by an 1889 2-page tongue-in-cheek letter signed by U.S. Treasurer James W. Hyatt to N.Y. Senator Charles S. Baker in which Hyatt informs Baker that he will have to inform his constituent that the $3 note, with its 109 years of interest, is not and "was never redeemable by the United States". An interesting piece of historical collateral for a currency collector.
