The Polynesian, 1840-41, Vol. 1, No 1-52, the first 52 issues of a weekly tabloid size newspaper published in Honolulu by one James Jackson Jarves, each issue contains four pages of news, poetry, ship sailings & arrivals and advertising. Additionally, tipped into issue No. 12 is an etching of "The appearance of the three hills formed by the late eruption, on the coast of Nanawale…July 9th, 1840". Bound between heavy cardboard with leather spine and hinges; binding split with front cover loose and there is some light toning, as would be expected, but altogether in remarkably good condition for a 165-year old newspaper.
