Tuscumbia, Ala., 1861, 3¢ dull red on buff (6AXU1), formerly 12XU1, envelope with very fine strike of red "Tuscumbia, Ala. 3 Paid" provisional handstamp, entered the mails with black "Tuscumbia Ala. Apr 30" c.d.s. to Mess. Carroll Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, La., Very Fine.

PERHAPS THE FINEST OF ONLY A FEW RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 3¢ TUSCUMBIA ENVELOPE USED AS A PROVISIONAL.

Expertization: 1988 P.F. Certificate.

Provenance: Storow, Col. Green, Caspary

The Tuscumbia postmaster issued a 3¢ provisional envelope even though it was part of the Confederate postal system at this time. There are at least two examples of this envelope with U.S. 3¢ postage applied over the provisional handstamp that are not considered provisional usages.
