1883, 2¢ red brown and 4¢ blue-green (210, 211), singles cancelled by sock-on-nose strikes of clear "Addison N.Y. Oct 1 1883" c.d.s. on post office stationery, additionally bearing prior issue 2¢ vermilion (183) and 3¢ green (184) similarly cancelled and affixed to letter, additional strike of c.d.s. on dateline, signed by Elmer E. Biles, the deputy postmaster; 2¢ red brown with slight crease, Very Fine.

A UNIQUE COMBINATION FIRST DAY DOCUMENT THAT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE 1883 RATE CHANGE. THIS WAS ONLY RECENTLY DISCOVERED IN A FAMILY ARCHIVE.

Expertization: 1998 A.P.S. Certificate.

The letter reads, "This stamp is the first two cent stamp sold and cancelled at Addison N.Y. Post-Office. The reduction of postage on first class-mail matter from 3¢ to 2¢ for ½ oz or fraction there of took effect this first day of October 1883. Elmer E. Biles, Deputy Postmaster, Addison P.O., New York."
