Henry III, the son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici, succeeded his brother, Charles IX. He persecuted and fought the Huguenots, and even refused to consider marriage to Queen Elizabeth I on religious grounds, since she was a Protestant. Religious wars saw concessions made to Protestants, and by the end of his reign France was left with intrigues and civil war, which were epitomized by murderous plots including the eventual assassination of Henry, the last male of the Valois line.
