AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE 20TH CENTURY PLATE BLOCK THOUGHT TO BE ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN.

Expertization: Ward backstamp, 1992 P.F. Certificate.

Gary Griffiths, in The United States Stamps 1922-26, notes that Philip Ward reported the find of this variety noting that a lower left pane from plate 14818 was found in Oklahoma in April 1925. Ward purchased it soon after its discovery. The pane had been marked for destruction by blue crayon but this plate block of six was spared.

In our last sale, we offered the matching 557a imperforate plate block, also one of two known, that realized $28,750. We envision a similar result with this item.
