Church, Frederic Edwin (1826-1900), American landscape painter, a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters. Two ALsS, "F.E. Church", each 1½ pages on two sides of a single leaf, 8 x 10, aboard the Brig Putnam, April 15 & 23, 1853. Church, while on a voyage to Colombia with Cyrus W. Field (the entrepeneur who financed the first trsnsatlantic cable), writes to his father of the voyage. The first letter was supposed to have been mailed on the 15th but for some reason they were unable to put their letters aboard the intended vessel. Letters bear the embossed seal of "Cyrus W. Field & Co., New York". Includes mailing envelope postmarked blue "SHIP" and "7"; F-VF.
