THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED WITHOUT GRILL VARIETY USED ON COVER, BEING THE RARE GRAY PAPER VARIETY.

The 1869 3¢ without grill variety can only be certified with the presence of original gum due to confusion with the later reissue. However, gray paper was used only on the 1869 regular issue and therefore allows certification of used without grill varieties.
