1869, 3¢ ultramarine (114), tied by split cork cancellation duplexed with "Utica N.Y. Jun 8" c.d.s. on Leeds Patent envelope to Cooperstown, N.Y., cover restored, Fine.
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED 1869 USAGES ON A LEEDS PATENT ENVELOPE, THIS BEING THE LATEST RECORDED USE OF A LEEDS ENVELOPE.

Expertization: 1968 P.F. Certificate.

Provenance: Wunsch

The Leeds Patent envelope was designed for a stamp to be placed over the lattice section and adhere to the letter inside the envelope. When the letter was removed, so would the stamp. There were about ten marketing advantages listed for using the Leeds envelopes, including positive identification of the letter mailing date if the cover was ever lost. The envelopes were only distributed from 1861-1865. See lot 50 for the other 1869 Leeds envelope usage from the Gilbert correspondence.
