"Via Nicaragua / Ahead of the Mails", red framed handstamp on 1853 printed circular (additional handwritten message) to London, England bearing 3¢ dull red (11) four margins, and 12¢ black (17) three margins, cancelled by three strikes of "20" debit handstamp with additional strike at right, endorsed "P Cortes Via Nicaragua", British due rating also ties 3¢; vertical file fold, a Very Fine usage.

A STUNNING AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE "VIA NICARAGUA" USAGE TO AN OVERSEAS DESTINATION.

Upon arrival in New York City, the "20" debit rating was used to cancel the stamps in accordance with the regulation that partial payment was not accepted for British mail. The sender may have misunderstood the rates thinking the 1853 15¢ rate to certain German States applied to Britain.
