1899 (Nov. 7) U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai China registered to U.SA., envelope with "Fairhurst & Co. * Foochow" oval company handstamp on flap, bearing 1898 Trans-Miss. 1¢ 2¢ and 10¢ (285, 286, 290), each with magenta "1899" control handstamps, tied upon arrival with "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai, Oct 14, 1899" duplex postmark, locally produced black Shanghai registry label affixed, San Francisco (11.7) backstamp, purple "Received, Nov 7 1899, Santa Cruz, Cal." handstamp, 1¢ and 2¢ with tiny flaws, a Very Fine usage.

AN REGISTERED USE ORIGINATING FROM FOOCHOW VIA THE U.S. POSTAL AGENCY IN CHINA BEARING A BLACK SHANGHAI REGISTRY LABEL.

The magenta "1899" handstamps appear to be added by the Foochow company as a security measure to prevent the theft of stamps similiar to the I.P.O. tie prints.
