Lot 198

WHALING CORRESPONDENCE, Seven letters written aboard the bark Morning Star on a voyage out of New Bedford from July 12, 1898 until August 16, 1901. One letter is from the Captain, Edward King, the others from his wife Lydia. All are written to a Miss May Reed in New Bedford who had taken on the task of caring for Capt. King's elderly father while the couple was at sea. The letters relate every day goings on from places like Azores, Cape Verde and St. Helena from a voyage that was intended to last only a year but was extended due to poor luck whaling. Capt. King's father passed away before the Captain returned. Includes two photos of the Morning Star.
