A former Indian fighter and engineering instructor at West Point, David Harris served as engineer under General Beaurigard. He was responsible for fortifying Fort Pillow and Island 10 and later engineered the defenses at Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg. He died of yellow fever in Charleston on Oct. 10, 1864.
