Confederacy, David's Island, Pelham, N.Y., envelope from a prisoner of war to Mattoax Depot, Virginia., bearing U.S. 3¢ rose tied by target, matching "Pelham N.Y./Aug 31" (1863) c.d.s., in combination with 10¢ blue, Die A (11) from the bottom of the sheet tied by "Richmond Virginia./Sep 11 186(3)" c.d.s., stamps have surface faults or creases, and cover tear at top, nevertheless Fine and rare usage (only 10 covers recorded) from this prison, which though was leased by the Federal government in 1861, was really only used to house wounded Confederate prisoners during the four months following the Battle of Gettysburg.
