The writer, D Hooper, gives details of his capture on Sept. 12, 1861, following a skirmish between Union troops and General Anderson's Tennessee Brigade on Cheat Mountain. Being wounded, Hooper and six other soldiers were left behind in a house. They were taken prisoner the following day, and two subsequently died. The five survivors were held at Grafton (Va.) Hospital until well enough to be transported to Camp Chase, where they arrived on Dec. 7, 1861. One man was exchanged shortly thereafter. Hooper is requesting that the four remaining prisoners be placed on the list to be exchanged "learning that some sick and wounded have been sent North to be exchanged."
