Confederacy, Athens, Ga., 1861, 5¢ purple (5X1), rich color, margins close to mostly touching, just tied by grid, matching "5" and "Paid" on cover to Lamar Cobb, originally care of Wm. M. Browne Acting Sec. of State in Richmond and redirected to the 16th Ga. Regt. at Yorktown. Fine.
Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

RARE COMBINATION OF ADHESIVE PROVISIONAL AND HANDSTAMP TO MAKE UP THE 10¢ RATE.

This cover represents an interesting and rare usage where a five cent provisional adhesive stamp was used in conjunction with a "Paid 5" handstamp to indicate that a total rate of ten cents had been prepaid. There is one other example of this combination reported from Athens that bears the 5¢ red stamp rather than the 5¢ purple stamp. These two covers are the only examples of which we are aware.
