France, 1870 Ballon Monté Le Franklin (BM38), folded "Gazette des Absents" No. 12 (datelined Wednesday, 30 Nov) to Carmaux franked with 20c Ceres tied by light cancel and postmarked 1 Dec, backstamped Carmaux, 8 Dec with another, not-quite-legible transit c.d.s. alongside. Very Fine.

We have attributed this cover to Le Franklin, but with the postmark date of 1 December, it could possibly have been carried on Le Volta, the only balloon from which no mail has been recorded. Further research would be required.
