Zachary Taylor grew up on the frontier of Kentucky, entering the U.S. Infantry in 1808 as a 1st lieutenant and distinguished himself in the War of 1812., fighting Indians in central Indiana. In 1819, he received the promotion to lieutenant-colonel and was stationed at several military outposts on the Western frontier.
