Samuel Northrup Castle arrived in Honolulu in 1837 as part of the 8th Company of American Missionaries. Along with his partner Amos Cooke, he founded the company Castle & Cooke, which began as a Honolulu store in 1851. As one of the Big Five companies, they invested heavily in the islands' sugar industry, eventually acquiring both the Dole Food and the Standard Fruit Companies.
