Pellet, an associate of Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone, was a popular temperance lecturer on the west coast, especially in the mining towns where a woman standing on a box in front of a saloon represented rare entertainment for easily aroused miners. In 1854 she tried (and failed) to arrange the importation of 5,000 New England young women to California, chaperoned by the Sons of Temperance. In exchange, miners were expected to give up alcohol.
