Lot 362
1857, 5¢ red brown, type I (28), warm, rich color with a razor-sharp prooflike impression, full, partially redistributed original gum, small, light tone spot in lower right margin, otherwise fresh and Fine. Scott $60,000
AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE STAMP WITH ORIGINAL GUM.
Expertization: 1995 PF Certificate.
The 5¢ red brown, type I is easily among the most difficult 19th century United States stamps to find unused with any portion of its original gum remaining as does this one; additionally we have never seen an unused example with the perforations clear of design.
