Lot 2323

1852, 3¢ orange red (11A), margins to bit in, pen squiggle, on Nov. 1861 cover to "Bangor Maine United States" with endorsement "Via Montreal" and manuscript. "10" due marking opposite stamp; reverse with partly clear "Mont. & Isl. Pond G.T.R. No. 19, 1861/ Down" c.d.s. on bottom flap; cover irregularly opened along top with mended corner nick at left, fair condition. A strange and plausible usage from Canada, with usual part-payment ignored, probably mailed by someone attempting to use whatever old stamps they had on hand once the process of demonetization had begun in late August, 1861.
Estimate $750 - 1,000
