1848 (Mar. 4) Robert H. Morris as Postmaster of New York to Postmaster General Johnson concerning cancel removal, (1845-1849), creator of the New York Postmasters' Provisionals ALS as New York Postmaster "R. H. Morris PM", one page, 8" x 10", City of New York, March 7, 1848, to The Hon. C. (Cave) Johnson, Postmaster General, in part,
"I enclose you a letter from the Postmaster at Providence to me dated 6th March upon which is one of the Post Office stamps. He informs me, as you will observe, that the stamp was killed in my office, and that the marks have been taken out with India rubber. The Providence Postmaster is mistaken in supposing that the paint we use to destroy these stamps is not mixed with oil. We mix it with the best sweet oil. In England, as I am informed they have an ink they use for the purpose of destroying the stamps which cannot be extracted."

Letter docketed (by Johnson?) in part "PM writes in reference to stamps used second time…", slight splits, Very Fine, first time offered at public auction.
