Danish West Indies, 1854 (Aug. 11) Barbados to St. John's, Newfoundland via St. Thomas, datelined folded letter bearing Barbados 1854 (2d) "Britannia", vertical bisect (2b), full even margins, just affected by filing crease, tied by "1" barred cancel, Barbados (8.11) backstamp, manuscript "4" rating, St. Thomas and St. Johns (9.4) backstamps; edge and file fold reinforced, a Very Fine and rare use.

THIS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED 1854 2D. BISECT USAGES, THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE TRANSITING ST. THOMAS.

This letter was carried by the ship "Conway" from Barbados to St. Thomas, and transferred to ship "Merlin" via Bermuda to Newfoundland.

Due to a shortage of 1d stamps, Barbados authorized the use of 2d bisects during this time period.
