ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE SMALL TYPE 1901 2¢ PROVISIONAL ISSUE USED ON COVER.

On January 1, 1902, a new 2¢ rate for domestic first class mail and foreign post cards went into effect, but no 2¢ stamps were available. Overprints of the current 3¢ stamp were suggested reading "2/Cents/1902".

Essays for official consideration were prepared reading "2/Cents/1901". Perhaps four sheets of the 3¢ were thus overprinted, the date 1901 is seen in both small (2mm) and large (2.5mm) numbers. Two of these sheets may have been accidently given to the Post Office for sale. Eight covers are known, five with the large year and three with the small year.
